MW4 Gunfight Guide: 3v3 and 10v10

Gunfight comes back in Modern Warfare 4 with two formats at launch: the returning 3v3 and an all-new 10v10, both played on Kill Block. Every round is single-life, every player in the round gets the same randomised loadout with no custom classes allowed, and after every second round the map changes to a new Combo and a fresh loadout is issued. If the timer runs out with both teams alive, an Overtime Flag deploys to decide the round.

  • Single-life rounds. No respawns, no second chances inside a round.
  • Shared randomised loadout: same primary, secondary, tactical and lethal for everyone.
  • New Combo and new loadout every two rounds, with spawn sides swapped after round one.
  • Overtime Flag if the round timer expires with both teams still alive.

Gunfight Rules in MW4

The core loop is unchanged from what Gunfight veterans expect: one life per round, eliminate the other team to take the round, and no respawns to bail you out of a bad opening. What is different in MW4 is the scale of the map rotation behind it.

Both variants run on Kill Block, so the arena you fight in is a Combo: two End Slabs and one Central Slab bolted together. Each Combo is the same size as the Modern Warfare (2019) map Shoot House, but the internal layout and the sightlines across it change between Combos. The Kill Block guide covers how Slabs and Combos are assembled if you want the detail behind that.

There are no custom loadouts in this mode. That single rule is what makes Gunfight a test of weapon handling rather than class building, and it is why the mode is the fastest way to learn the launch weapon roster.

Build your class somewhere else

Anything you have spent time tuning in Create a Class is irrelevant inside a Gunfight match. You cannot bring your own guns, perks or equipment, so the mode rewards players who learn how several different weapons handle instead of mastering one build. The Create a Class guide is for the playlists where your loadout actually shows up.

Shared Randomised Loadouts and the Two-Round Rotation

Here is the rotation the official guide describes, step by step.

  1. The round starts with every Operator equipped with the same randomised primary and secondary weapons, plus the same tactical and lethal equipment. Both teams get identical gear, so the round is decided by positioning and gunskill.
  2. Teams swap spawn sides after the first round, so each side gets to attack and defend the same layout before it disappears.
  3. After the second round ends, the three Slabs change to a new Combo, a new random loadout is issued to every player, and the match continues.
  4. Combos keep changing every two rounds until one team wins six rounds, according to the official deep dive on Kill Block.

Official source: Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer: Kill Block Intel - the six-round match length, the side swap after round one and the shared-loadout rule all come from this post.

That two-round window is the real unit of the mode. You get one round on each side of the same layout with the same guns, and then both the map and the equipment are thrown away. Learning a Combo fast is more valuable than learning it perfectly, because you will not see it again this match.

Rotation step What changes
After round 1 Teams swap spawn sides only. Same Combo, same loadout.
After round 2 New Combo, new randomised loadout for everyone.
Every 2 rounds after that The same reset repeats until a team reaches six round wins.

The Overtime Flag

If neither team is eliminated before the round timer expires, an Overtime Flag deploys into the combat zone and forces both teams to converge on it. Capturing the Flag wins the round. If time runs out without a capture, the round goes to the team holding the health advantage.

The Flag is the reason you should never treat a stalemate as a safe outcome. A team that has been playing slowly behind cover suddenly has to cross open ground against opponents who may already be set up on the Flag, and the health advantage tiebreak punishes the side that spent the round taking chip damage without trading anything back.

Break the stalemate yourself

The official Kill Block tips put it plainly: do not forget the Overtime Flag, and if neither team is eliminated before time expires it becomes the fastest route to victory. If both sides are hiding, the team that moves first usually gets there with a full-health player rather than a hurt one.

Equipment Timing and the Opening Fight

Tactical and Lethal equipment unlock shortly after each round begins. That delay is intentional, and it changes the correct order of operations: win the opening engagement with positioning and gunplay before you lean on equipment.

Practically, that means the opening of a Gunfight round is a pure gunfight, and a squad that saves its push for the moment equipment comes online is gambling on surviving that long with a man disadvantage. Use the early window to take map control, then use the unlocked equipment to convert that control into the round.

The same logic applies to the map itself. Kill Block Slabs carry verticality, containers and upper balconies, and the game's full movement set works here, so height is available to whoever climbs first. It is also exposed, which is exactly the trade you want to force on the other team rather than accept yourself.

3v3 vs 10v10, and the Gunfight Arenas

The two launch variants share the same single-life, shared-loadout, two-round rotation ruleset: the official overview describes both under one set of rules. What differs is the player count, and the difference is bigger than it sounds.

Gunfight 3v3 Gunfight 10v10
Players per side 3 10
Rounds Single-life, shared randomised loadout Single-life, shared randomised loadout
Map Kill Block Combo Kill Block Combo
Rotation New Combo and loadout every two rounds New Combo and loadout every two rounds
Overtime Overtime Flag Overtime Flag

In 3v3, three players cover a full Combo, so a single pick usually decides the round and information is precious. In 10v10 the same footprint is crowded, trades happen faster, and the mode turns into a numbers fight where keeping ten players alive as a group matters more than individual heroics. Neither variant has a Hardcore version announced for launch.

Gunfight also has dedicated small arenas in the launch set beyond Kill Block: Café, Library, NYC and Smuggler. Expect those to appear as the familiar tight Gunfight spaces while Kill Block carries the rotating Combo matches, and watch the official Modern Warfare 4 hub for any post-launch Gunfight plans.

FAQ

How do you win a round in MW4 Gunfight?

Eliminate the entire opposing team before the round timer expires, or capture the Overtime Flag if neither team is wiped in time. If the round times out without a Flag capture, the team with the health advantage takes it.

Is MW4 Gunfight 3v3 or 10v10?

Both. Gunfight 3v3 returns and Gunfight 10v10 is an all-new variant, and both are available at launch on Kill Block.

What loadout do you use in Gunfight?

Whatever the game hands you. Every player in the round gets the same randomised primary and secondary weapons plus the same tactical and lethal equipment, and custom loadouts are not available inside the mode.

How often does the Gunfight map change?

Every two rounds. The three Slabs reassemble into a new Combo, a fresh randomised loadout is issued, and teams also swap spawn sides after the first round.

How many rounds do you need to win Gunfight?

The official Kill Block deep dive says the Combos keep changing every two rounds until one team wins six rounds.

What maps are in MW4 Gunfight?

Kill Block Combos host both Gunfight variants, and the launch set also includes dedicated Gunfight arenas: Café, Library, NYC and Smuggler.

Is there Hardcore Gunfight in MW4?

No Hardcore variant has been announced for Gunfight. Activision's Hardcore markers cover six Core modes, and Gunfight is not among them.
