Campaign Early Access runs from October 16 for digital pre-orders. Every completion reward, and how DMZ early access follows on October 20.
MW4 Campaign Early Access: Dates and Rewards
MW4 Campaign Early Access is live now. If you hold a digital pre-order of Modern Warfare 4 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Steam or Battle.net, the entire 16-mission campaign has been playable since October 16, 2026, and stays open until the full game unlocks at local midnight on October 23. DMZ early access follows on Tuesday, October 20.
The short version:
- Campaign Early Access: live since October 16, 2026, for digital pre-orders on every supported platform (Switch 2 pre-orders open later in 2026)
- It closes the moment the game unlocks locally on October 23, 2026
- DMZ Early Access: October 20, 2026, again for digital pre-orders
- Finishing the campaign during the window banks 16 rewards in order, usable in multiplayer and DMZ once the launch build is live

Two things the date list does not tell you. First, the window is tied to digital pre-orders, so the console-only Physical Standard Edition is not part of it. Second, the October 23 unlock is local midnight, which means players in Seoul and players in Los Angeles do not start together. Switch 2 is a supported platform but its pre-orders were announced for later in 2026, so check that store listing for its own campaign window.
If you have not bought yet, the editions and pre-order bonus breakdown covers what the Vault Edition adds, including the BlackCell season, the Signature Weapon Collection and the extra DMZ Active Duty slot. All of that comes from the official editions and pre-order announcement, and the Steam store page lists the editions on the PC side. MW4 also skips Game Pass at launch, which the Game Pass and crossplay page explains in full.
What You Need to Get Into Campaign Early Access
Getting in is a purchase, not an unlock grind. There is no beta key, no level gate and nothing to claim in a menu.
- Buy Modern Warfare 4 digitally and pre-order, not post-launch. Any digital edition counts: the Standard Edition or the Vault Edition.
- Play on a supported platform: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, PC via Steam or Battle.net, or Nintendo Switch 2. MW4 does not ship on Xbox One or PS4.
- On PC, preload from October 15 at 09:00 PT so the game is ready when the campaign window opens.
- Expect no Game Pass entry. Activision confirmed MW4 is not a day-one Game Pass title, breaking a two-year run.
Vault Edition owners get the same campaign window plus the extra cosmetics, and returning players who owned a qualifying earlier Call of Duty title on the same platform and account can still take the 10% Vault Edition loyalty discount through October 23. That discount does not apply to upgrading a Standard purchase afterward.

Every Campaign Completion Reward, In Order
Campaign rewards unlock as you clear missions, one per completion step, in a fixed sequence. The full ordered list is 16 entries: eight base Operators, three cosmetic items and five XP tokens.
| # | Reward | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cho base Operator | Operator |
| 2 | "No More Rules" calling card | Cosmetic |
| 3 | Double XP Token | Token |
| 4 | Dallas base Operator | Operator |
| 5 | "Ready Line" loading screen | Cosmetic |
| 6 | Luca base Operator | Operator |
| 7 | "Gone Dark" emblem | Cosmetic |
| 8 | Oh-Ji base Operator | Operator |
| 9 | Double XP Token | Token |
| 10 | Kal base Operator | Operator |
| 11 | Double Weapon XP Token | Token |
| 12 | Dunn base Operator | Operator |
| 13 | Double Weapon XP Token | Token |
| 14 | West base Operator | Operator |
| 15 | Double XP Token | Token |
| 16 | Park base Operator | Operator |
The tail of the list is where the value sits: the last four entries hand you a Double Weapon XP Token, the West base Operator, another Double XP Token and finally the Park base Operator. If you only have a few nights inside the early access window, the tokens at positions 3, 9, 11, 13 and 15 are what makes the grind into multiplayer cheaper once the full game opens.
Rewards are tied to campaign completion rather than to individual difficulty clears, so there is no second pass waiting for you on a harder setting just to bank the Operator lineup.
Do the Rewards Carry Into Multiplayer and DMZ?
Yes. The campaign reward set becomes usable in multiplayer and DMZ once the full game launches on October 23. Playing the campaign first is therefore the cheapest way to walk into multiplayer with eight extra Operators already unlocked and a stack of XP tokens in hand.
Two smaller notes worth knowing before you plan a session. The MW4 campaign is fully playable offline, which is a first for the series since Vanguard, and Theater Mode returns for the first time in an Infinity Ward title since Modern Warfare III. Neither feature changes the unlock order above, but both make a solo early access weekend easier to arrange.
The campaign length and rewards page breaks down how long that completion run actually takes and what reviewers reported about it, while the missions list tracks how the 16 stages are laid out.
Double XP and Double Weapon XP Tokens are only worth spending once multiplayer and DMZ are live on October 23. Burning them during a solo campaign run wastes them, because the campaign does not tier up your multiplayer progression at the same rate.
DMZ Early Access Opens on October 20
DMZ does not wait for launch day either. Digital pre-orders get the full DMZ mode from Tuesday, October 20, three days before the general unlock, on the Hajin Exclusion Zone map. That is the same mode that carries its own progression ladder from DMZ level 1 to 70, its own extraction economy and a forward operating base to upgrade.
If you plan to jump straight from the campaign into DMZ, the DMZ early access page covers the exact window and the DMZ beginner guide covers the first raid, since the extraction loop asks for very different habits than a scripted campaign mission.
Play It Without Spoiling It for Everyone Else
Infinity Ward asked players to keep quiet about campaign details ahead of early access, which matters more than usual here because the campaign finishes the current Modern Warfare story line and the studio has already said there will be no Modern Warfare 5.
Details from the last third of the campaign circulate within hours of the window opening. If you care about the story, mute Call of Duty channels and skip comment sections until you finish, and read our story recap for the older games only, which contains no MW4 plot beats.
FAQ
When does MW4 Campaign Early Access start? It opened on October 16, 2026, for digital pre-orders, and runs until the full game unlocks at local midnight on October 23, 2026.
Is Campaign Early Access free to play? No. It is a pre-order benefit for digital purchases on any supported platform. There is no free weekend for the campaign, and MW4 is not part of Game Pass at launch.
Does Campaign Early Access include multiplayer or DMZ? Campaign Early Access covers the campaign only. DMZ opens on October 20 for digital pre-orders, and multiplayer arrives with the full launch on October 23.
How long do I have to finish the campaign during early access? The window is October 16 through October 23, so about a week. If the 8 to 9 hour length that reviewers report holds up, that is comfortable, but the rewards unlock in a fixed order as you work through the campaign, so the last few items only land if you reach the end of the story.
Does the Switch 2 version get Campaign Early Access too? Switch 2 is a supported platform and follows the same digital pre-order rule. Nintendo pre-orders were announced for later in 2026, so Switch 2 players should confirm the campaign window on their own store listing before planning around it.
Can I keep playing the campaign after October 23? Yes. Early access does not expire anything. Your campaign save, progress and all 16 rewards stay with you once the full game is live.
