How DMZ works in Modern Warfare 4: deploying into Hajin, what to loot first, how the threat system escalates and making your first extraction.
MW4 DMZ Guide: How to Play
In MW4 DMZ you deploy into the Hajin Exclusion Zone as an off-the-books CIA asset, loot and complete Orders, fight North Korean forces and rival Operators, and try to extract with whatever you can carry. Your DMZ Player Level runs from 1 to 70, weapon progression is shared with Multiplayer, and runs still pay out even when you die.
- Every point of interest has its own Threat Level, from Low to Extreme, shown under your HUD compass as you arrive.
- Searching containers is one of the most reliable sources of DMZ XP, especially early on.
- Stealth kills with melee, throwing knives or suppressed shots cross high-threat ground without starting a fight.
- The After Action Report rates you from F to S++ based on Objectives, Combat and Looting, not on extracting alone.
The mistake that kills new players is treating DMZ like a looter shooter where gear is permanent. It is not: your backpack, weapons and rare crafting ingredients only become yours once the helicopter lifts off with you inside it.
What DMZ Is and What You Take In
DMZ is Call of Duty's definitive extraction shooter, built on a persistent, open-world combat environment where players loot, complete objectives, fight both enemies and rival Operators, and hope to extract with their rewards. It picks up after the Modern Warfare 4 Campaign: an exclusion zone across the Korean peninsula is saturated with abandoned military technology, and you go behind enemy lines to secure it before it falls into hostile hands.
Hajin sits in a tri-point region bordering Russia and the Korean peninsula. Weather matters: sudden downpours cut visibility and fog banks turn memorised routes into navigational gambles. You can run DMZ solo or with a squad, and Activision has not published a fixed player count per match, so treat any exact figure you see quoted as unconfirmed.
Everything you own between deployments lives at the Forward Operating Base (FOB). Eight stations are available from your first session, and the rest unlock as you play.
| FOB station | When it unlocks |
|---|---|
| 3D Printer | DMZ Level 2 |
| Boss Board | After your second DMZ Order |
| Vendor | DMZ Level 5 |
| Gunsmith | DMZ Level 10 |
| Dog Tag Case | DMZ Level 20 |
Operators (Active Duty), DMZ Orders, Stash/Loadout, the Firing Range and Survival Kits are open from the start, and the official FOB guide walks through each station.

You start with two Active Duty Operators, each with their own persistent backpack, loadout and Trait tree, and the Vault Edition raises that to three.
Deploying Into Hajin and the Loot-First Loop
Deployment uses the Paid Infil System: quiet on foot, fast and loud in a helicopter or a large plane, or with a vehicle dropped in alongside you. A loud infil puts you in contact immediately; a quiet walk lets you pick your first building before anyone knows you are there.
Looting should be among your first priorities after infil.
- Grab Armor Plates and consumables like Bandages where they are known to spawn.
- Use Keys you find on special loot rooms.
- A door locked from the inside means there is another way in, so go find it.
- In rural and wooded areas, watch for underground entrances.
- Complete Dynamic Operations for the Supply Drop reward, which climbs from Common to Uncommon to Rare with each successful Op inside a deployment.
- At the FOB, the 3D Printer hints at where specific materials tend to be found.

Do not loot for the whole match. The official advice is a well-rounded deployment across Combat, Looting and Objectives on the way to an S-Tier rating, because the rating drives your progression. The June DMZ overview covers how Dynamic Operations and Side Ops escalate.
Weapons, Armor Plates, Keys and 3D Printer Ingredients are lost if your Operator dies. Bank one clean extraction before you take fights you do not need.
Threat Levels and the Stealth Meter
Every point of interest has its own danger rating called Threat. Low is the least problematic level you will find in a location with enemies; Extreme is the highest. It sits in the top-middle of your HUD under the compass, and it rises as you engage increasingly capable enemies, which triggers extra hostile reinforcements at higher tiers.
Threat falls if you calm things down: break contact, take cover, vanish into the shadows, flee to a more rural environment, and get far enough away that the enemy loses their visual or audible lock on you. The Hostiles Kill Count pushes the other way. If that meter fills, an enemy Hunt Squad is dispatched to track you down and you become Marked for Death.
Human Operators are not included. A rival squad can be holding the building you just cleared, and nothing on your HUD will warn you about it.
The Stealth Meter is the counterweight, and it is aimed particularly at solo players. When AI is close to spotting you, you get an audio cue and an indicator that changes from white to yellow to orange. Hit the deck or get back into cover before the observer is fully alerted. Stealth eliminations with melee weapons, throwing knives or suppressed shots are the best way to cross a high-threat area without triggering a response at all.
Looting vs Orders vs Combat: How the F to S++ Rating Works
Whether you exfil successfully or not, the After Action Report splits your deployment into four sections.
| Section | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Report | Items and resources gathered, valuable and rare items, 3D Printer ingredients, and total DMZ Cash moved into your Bank. |
| Rating | A combined F to S++ score for Objectives, Combat and Looting, with totals for AI Kills, Missions Completed, Loot Containers Opened and Side Ops Completed. |
| Level | XP applied to your DMZ Player Level (1-70), plus a Dog Tag level up from Steel to Onyx III across 18 levels, awarding an Operator Trait each time. |
| Summary | The DMZ Orders you completed and the rewards attached to them. |
The three pillars are the score, not alternatives. Looting containers is a reliable XP source and the fastest way to grow your FOB. DMZ Orders are described officially as among the most reliable ways to advance your DMZ Level while building your Stash. Combat feeds weapon progression and camo challenges, and eliminating rival Operators is worth more XP than taking down AI.
Failed extractions carry no XP penalty, so there is no reason to skip objectives out of fear of losing a gun.
A run that banks three Orders, forty containers and a handful of AI kills usually out-earns a run that hoarded one rare item.
First Extraction: What to Do in Your Opening Runs
Exfil sites are enabled from a pool of locations across Hajin and marked by a plume of green smoke. Call in the Twin Heli Exfil helicopter, then hold the site until it arrives while enemy pressure builds around you. You can also use alternate methods such as a Fulton balloon or a Flare, though flares are extremely loud and visible from a very long distance.
Beware of exfil sites. They are classic ambush points, and if you are carrying a Lieutenant's Dog Tags your position is broadcast to the whole map, which makes a fast exfil the safest option rather than a choice.
A plan that works for opening runs: infil quietly, loot one low-threat area such as the Deadtown exterior, Imjin Farmland or Songdo Wharf, complete one DMZ Order on the way, then leave early. Note the Time Remaining readout, which shows when the radiation storm intensifies; once it worsens, head for an exfil instead of deeper into the city.
If it goes wrong you still have options. The Tourniquet heals you back to a wounded state without self-revive, but you will not last long and need extra medical items for full health. A dead Operator becomes MIA, and paying DMZ Cash at the FOB deploys a rescue team that returns the Operator without their gear.
Once the basics are automatic, the map is the thing to learn: threat tiers decide where you can go, and building type decides what you find. Exact threat ratings for every site are in the MW4 DMZ Hajin map guide.
FAQ
How many players are in a MW4 DMZ match?
Activision has not published a fixed player count, and no match size has been announced. Ignore exact figures you see quoted.
Why do I keep dying straight after landing in DMZ?
Usually because you infiled loud or walked into a High or Extreme POI with a starting loadout. Land quiet, loot a Low threat area, and only push Critical zones with armor plates and a suppressed option.
Do you lose everything when you die in DMZ?
You lose the gear on that Operator but keep your DMZ Player Level, FOB unlocks, Stash and anything already banked. MIA recovery costs DMZ Cash and returns the Operator without their equipment.
What is the Stealth Meter in MW4 DMZ?
A solo-friendly HUD indicator that turns from white to yellow to orange with an audio cue when AI is close to spotting you. Hit the deck or get back into cover before it fills.
What does the F to S++ rating actually reward?
Officially it is described only as a combined score for Objectives, Combat and Looting, so it rewards a balanced deployment rather than maxing one column. No per-letter thresholds have been published.
