The Modern Warfare story so far - Urzikstan, Task Force 141, Shepherd's betrayal and Makarov - recapped before you start MW4.
MW4 Story Recap: What Happened Before
The MW4 story picks up with North Korea invading South Korea and Captain Price working outside the law to find out who is behind it. To follow any of that you need four games of history: Urzikstan and General Barkov in 2019, Task Force 141 forming off the books, Shepherd and Shadow Company smuggling missiles in MWII, and Makarov's Channel Tunnel plot that killed Soap in MWIII. This page is the official recap, in order, with no MW4 plot beats in it.
The beats, in one list:
- 2019: Verdansk raid, Barkov's chemical weapons, Farah Karim's ULF, Barkov killed
- Task Force 141 formed by Price as an off-the-books counter-terror unit
- MWII: Shepherd and Shadow Company sell missiles, Makarov ends up with them, Shadow Company betrays 141 in Las Almas
- MWIII: the Channel Tunnel plot, Soap killed by Makarov, Price assassinates Shepherd and goes underground
- MW4: a new invasion in Korea, with Price still outside the law
Modern Warfare (2019): Urzikstan, Barkov and the Chemical Weapons
The current story line starts in Verdansk, where an assault force raids the chemical weapons stockpile of a rogue general named Barkov. From there the trail runs to the London Piccadilly Circus attack carried out by Al-Qatala, and then into Urzikstan, where Farah Karim's ULF fights alongside the CIA's Alex.
The turn that still matters: the chemical weapons were stolen by Hadir, Farah's own brother. The campaign ends with Barkov's chemical weapons factory destroyed and Farah killing Barkov herself, which is where Urzikstan's place in the wider story is set and where a large part of the MW4 backdrop comes from.

Task Force 141 Is Formed Off the Books
Between those campaigns, Price assembles Task Force 141 by pulling the files of Gaz, Soap and Ghost. Laswell backs it, and the unit is built specifically to bypass normal military command channels: a counter-terror force that can act where standing orders stop.
That structure is the reason the later betrayals land so hard. A team that exists outside the chain of command has no one to appeal to when the chain of command turns on it.
Modern Warfare II (2022): Shepherd, Shadow Company and the Missiles
MWII is where the story's main villain gets his weapons. Shepherd and Shadow Company, run by Graves, are illegally smuggling US ballistic missiles. The Konni Group intercepts that shipment, and the weapons end up in Makarov's hands via a smuggling route run by the Las Almas cartel under Valeria Garza.
Then Shadow Company turns. In Las Almas they come for both Task Force 141 and Los Vaqueros: Alejandro Vargas is captured, Soap is wounded, and Ghost gets out. Shepherd's motive and Graves's contract are laid out across that campaign, and Shepherd walks away from it still holding office.
If you only remember one thing from MWII for MW4, make it this: Shepherd smuggled the missiles, Konni stole them, and Makarov kept them. Everything Makarov does afterward runs on that stockpile.
Modern Warfare III (2023): the Channel Tunnel and Soap's Death
MWIII opens with Makarov trying to blow the Channel Tunnel. Price and Soap go in to disarm the charges and are ambushed. Makarov shoots Soap in the head, and Soap dies there.
What Price does next sets up MW4's premise. He gets into Shepherd's office and assassinates him, then drops off the grid, hunting Makarov alone and outside any chain of command. Price is not a serving officer with backup at the end of MWIII. He is a man with a wanted status and one target.

This page recaps character deaths from the three earlier campaigns. None of the MW4 plot is covered here beyond the official setup, which is the safest way to prepare for the new campaign if you are playing it during the early access window.
Modern Warfare 4: A New Invasion and Price Gone Dark
MW4 runs on two fronts. On the first, Price is out there on his own with hunters closing in on him, still chasing the people responsible, now working with the Las Almas cartel to do it. On the second, North Korea invades South Korea outright, and the campaign opens with Hajin City under full invasion.
You play the Korean side of that as Private Park Hyun Jun, a South Korean Army soldier in his first real combat, keeping his squad alive on a front line that is collapsing. The studio has confirmed this entry closes out the current Modern Warfare story line, and that there is no Modern Warfare 5 planned, with the next Modern Warfare sub-series already in production.
New Characters and Names to Watch
Park Hyun Jun is the confirmed new protagonist, and Price is the returning lead. Beyond those two, the clearest official list of new MW4 names is the campaign completion reward set, which hands out eight base Operators in order: Cho, Dallas, Luca, Oh-Ji, Kal, Dunn, West and Park.
| Name | Role as published | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Private Park Hyun Jun | South Korean Army soldier, first combat deployment, campaign protagonist | Official |
| Captain Price | Returning lead, wanted, working outside the law with the Las Almas cartel | Official |
| Cho, Dallas, Luca, Oh-Ji, Kal, Dunn, West, Park | Base Operators unlocked by finishing campaign stages | Official campaign completion reward list |
| Ghost, Valeria, Blix | Returning Operator names in the Vault Edition Hostile Alliance pack | Official edition and pre-order listing |
Everything else about the new cast, including who the invasion answers to and how the Price thread resolves, sits inside the campaign itself. The mission-by-mission structure is on the campaign missions list, and the playtime most players are reporting is on the campaign length page.
The story does not stop at the credits. DMZ continues it, with the player inserted as a CIA operative recovering military technology left behind by the war in the Hajin Exclusion Zone. The DMZ beginners guide covers how that mode works, and the DMZ early access page covers the October 20 digital pre-order window.
The Cheapest Way to Catch Up Before You Play
Read the five recap sections above in order and you are current enough to follow MW4. If you have time for exactly one older campaign, pick MWIII, because Soap's death and Price's assassination of Shepherd are the direct setup for the state Price is in during MW4.
Do not rely on recap videos for the MWII missiles thread. Who smuggled what to whom matters in MW4, and recaps routinely compress Shepherd, Graves, Konni and Makarov into a single villain when the actual chain is Shepherd sells, Konni intercepts, Makarov keeps.
If you want the reference material directly, Activision's own MW4 story recap is written by the studio and is the source for every beat on this page, while the official MW4 product page covers the setting.
