Printer resources, ingredients and recipes in MW4 DMZ, the known first recipes with their exact costs, and what each FOB upgrade does.
MW4 DMZ Crafting and 3D Printer Guide
The 3D Printer unlocks at DMZ level 2 and crafting runs on two separate pools of material. Resources are the four basics, Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals, which break down automatically as you loot and never fill a Stash slot. 3D Printer Ingredients are extracted intact and only leave your backpack after a successful exfil. Recipes come from leveling, from DMZ Orders, or from looting a recipe and extracting with it.
Six recipes are confirmed with exact costs at launch, and they cover the gear you will reprint constantly:
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Bandage | Synthetics 15 + Chemicals 15 |
| Medkit | Chemicals 30 + Binding Catalyst 1 + Biomaterials 5 |
| 1-Plate Armor Vest | Synthetics 25 + Metals 25 |
| 2-Plate Armor Vest | Synthetics 50 + Reactive Metals 5 |
| Small Backpack | Synthetics 25 + Metals 25 |
| Medium Backpack | Synthetics 50 + Rigid Synthetics 5 |
Resources vs ingredients
The four Resources are Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals. You pick them up in the field and they are immediately broken down into those categories. Their totals show in the bottom-left corner of both the Stash menu and the 3D Printer menu. Because they are tracked outside your inventory, hoarding Resources never costs you a stash slot.
3D Printer Ingredients are the opposite. They are found in specific areas of the map and they are extracted intact, which means they occupy backpack space during the run and Stash space afterwards. Known examples include Binding Catalyst, Biomaterials, Detonators and Control Units. All of them are valuable, because every recipe that is not purely Resource-based needs at least one.
The practical effect is that a crafting-focused run looks different from a cash-focused run. You are hunting particular buildings and particular containers rather than chasing kills, and you are deciding what to leave behind because a rare ingredient is worth more than three common weapons. The official Hajin intel blog lists which building types carry which loot, including the medical and military sites that feed ingredient runs.

How recipes unlock
Most recipes are locked when the Printer first opens. There are three unlock routes, and you will end up using all of them.
- Progressing your DMZ player level.
- Completing DMZ Orders.
- Looting a recipe in the field and successfully extracting with it.
The third route has a detail that catches new players out. When you extract while carrying a recipe, the recipe is consumed at exfil and permanently added to your 3D Printer menu. It also pays out 5,000 DMZ Cash on the same extraction. You do not store the item, you learn it.
Weapon Manuals follow the exact same rule in the Gunsmith. Extract with one and you unlock the ability to purchase that base weapon, plus 5,000 DMZ Cash for your trouble. That overlap is worth remembering, because a single lucky raid can teach you a recipe and a weapon at once.
Once a recipe is unlocked it stays unlocked. Nothing strips recipes from your Printer, and Prestiging an Operator does not touch them. The only thing that gates you later is the material cost. Weapon Manuals are the same kind of permanent unlock, as the DMZ overview explains when it covers the Gunsmith.
What you can print
The left side of the 3D Printer menu holds every craftable category. Some of the later entries need Printer upgrades before they appear.
- Upgrades: FOB and station upgrades, plus higher-rarity components.
- Consumables: single-use items that heal, boost performance, survive radiation or breach secured doors.
- Plate Carriers: more armor capacity, more durability and protection from one-shots.
- Backpacks: more carrying capacity, and Secure Slots that protect items from being lost on a failed exfil.
- Tacticals: utility gear to disrupt enemies, heal or take an advantage.
- Lethals: offensive equipment for clearing positions.
- Field Upgrades: ongoing tactical utility during an operation.
- Fire Support: Killstreaks, which in DMZ context means calling in support rather than earning it mid-match.
- Gear: facial gear against gas or darkness, plus parachutes.
- Ingredients: crafting ingredients that previously had to be looted.
Two printing rules matter. Field Upgrades crafted in DMZ do not recharge the way they do elsewhere, so treat them as single-use. And Upgrades are permanent FOB improvements, each requiring multiple prints to finish, which makes them a long-term cash and material sink rather than a quick purchase.
Every item has a stat screen that lists its name, rarity, the two or three sets of materials it needs and where it can go. You can send a finished print to your Stash or equip it directly to the Operator, craft several copies at once if you have the materials, and pin any recipe or ingredient to Track it so it shows up highlighted while you loot.
FOB upgrades and what they change
Select the Upgrades category at the Printer to see the permanent improvements available:
- Bank Upgrades, raising your DMZ Cash capacity.
- Stash Item Capacity Upgrades.
- MIA Recovery Discounts, which cut the fee for rescuing a downed Operator.
- Stash Weapon Capacity Upgrades.
- Increasingly Rare Ingredient Printing, letting you manufacture ingredients from Resources.
The Upgrades category also covers Station work: extra Dog Tag Case storage, Gunsmith discounts and additional Vendor purchase options once you have progressed far enough. You can also upgrade Printer Resources into higher-rarity components such as Rigid Synthetics and Alloyed Plating.
Valuables feed the same system. Items with a gem icon can be sold for DMZ Cash on the spot, but they are also required for FOB Upgrades at the Printer, so the easy cash is not always the right call. If you are close to a Bank or Stash upgrade, keep the gems.
Pin the recipe you are working on and its rarest ingredient before you deploy. Tracked ingredients get a pin icon while you loot, and the Printer number turns green the moment you have enough to craft.
FAQ
How do I unlock recipes in MW4 DMZ?
Three ways: raise your DMZ player level, complete DMZ Orders, or loot a recipe and extract with it. Extracting consumes the recipe, unlocks it permanently in the Printer and pays 5,000 DMZ Cash.
What are the four Resources in MW4 DMZ?
Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals. They break down automatically as you loot and do not take up Stash slots.
How much does a 2-Plate Armor Vest cost to print?
Synthetics 50 and Reactive Metals 5. You also need the recipe unlocked, which comes from leveling, Orders or extracting with it.
Where do I find Binding Catalyst?
Activision has not published fixed spawn points for individual ingredients. The Printer does show a recommended area to explore for ingredients, and Binding Catalyst is listed as Rare loot.
Do crafted Field Upgrades recharge in MW4 DMZ?
No. The official guide states that Field Upgrades in DMZ do not regenerate their charge, so a crafted one is effectively a single use.
