MW4 Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses Explained

There are three Modern Warfare 4 editions: a Digital Vault Edition, a Digital Standard Edition, and a physical Standard Edition on consoles only. Every pre-order, physical or digital, gets Open Beta early access and the Hunter Killer operator skin. The Vault Edition adds four operators with skins, four more Special Forces operators, five Signature weapons, one season of BlackCell, a DMZ Deployment Bonus and an extra DMZ operator slot. Live prices for each are on the Steam store page and at callofduty.com.

  • Pre-order bonus, all editions: Open Beta early access plus the Hunter Killer operator skin.
  • Vault Edition only: Hostile Alliance pack, Special Forces pack, Signature Weapon Collection, BlackCell for one season, DMZ Deployment Bonus, three Active Duty slots instead of two.
  • The 10% Loyalty Discount applies to the Vault Edition only, and only on the same platform and account that played a qualifying Call of Duty title.

Physical pre-orders work slightly differently on the beta. Digital buyers are granted Open Beta early access automatically, while physical buyers need the Beta code their retailer hands over at the point of sale. Anyone who does not pre-order at all can still play the open portion of the beta.

Hunter Killer unlocks in other Call of Duty games first

The Hunter Killer skin is usable immediately in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Warzone once you pre-order, and it arrives in Modern Warfare 4 itself at launch on October 23. Redeeming it requires owning Black Ops 7 or Warzone on the same platform, and the redemption window runs to October 23, 2027.

What Is Actually Inside the Vault Edition

The Vault Edition is the part people ask about, because the contents are spread across three different systems.

  • Hostile Alliance operator pack: Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix. Price and Valeria each have a masked and an unmasked variant skin.
  • Special Forces operator pack: COM SFT from France, KSK Amphibious from Germany, South Korean Special Forces and the SAS. Each has a skin built around their country of origin and a voice pack in that language.
  • Signature Weapon Collection: five weapons, each with a blueprint and an Apex Attachment already fitted. Kastov 762 with Voltspine, ISO Nightshade with La Sombra Venenosa, Rezi 12 with Shattered Code, Oris 8.6 with Volt-Edge, and the Combat Knife with Sombra Besada.
  • BlackCell for one season: 20 Battle Pass tier skips and 1,100 COD Points instantly, an exclusive operator and weapon blueprint, BlackCell variants of select Battle Pass content, and the full Battle Pass with its 100+ rewards.
  • DMZ Deployment Bonus: extra DMZ content at launch. The known Vault Edition Deployment Kit contains two Weapon Insurance Contracts, two Operator Rescue Beacons, two Fulton Drop Markers, two Medium Backpacks and two 2-Plate Carriers. Activision has said more detail is coming.

The extra DMZ Active Duty slot is easy to miss and matters if you plan to live in that mode. Standard owners start with two operators they can send into Hajin; Vault owners start with three. The DMZ FOB guide explains why the slot count changes how you build a roster.

The 10% Loyalty Discount, and Its Traps

The Loyalty Discount knocks 10% off the Vault Edition, and the conditions are strict enough that plenty of people will miss out by accident.

Qualifying titles: Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered, Black Ops Cold War, Vanguard, Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7. Any edition counts, including copies claimed through PlayStation Plus monthly games or played through an active Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or PC subscription.

  • The purchase has to be on the same platform and the same platform account as the qualifying title.
  • It applies to the Vault Edition only, not the Standard Edition.
  • It is available on pre-orders and pre-purchases only, and the offer runs until October 23, 2026.
  • It does not apply to Vault upgrades. Buying Standard and upgrading later forfeits it.
The upgrade path cancels the discount

Digital Standard can be upgraded to Vault Edition later, but only on the same platform as the original purchase, and an upgrade is not a pre-order, so the 10% discount is gone. If the Vault Edition is what you want, buy it first.

If you are weighing whether the Vault Edition is worth it at all, the deciding items are usually the five Signature weapons and the season of BlackCell rather than the operator skins, because those two directly touch gameplay and progression. BlackCell's timing is worth understanding too: buy and play before or during Season 1 and you get Season 1 BlackCell, buy later and you get whichever season is current.

Timing Your Purchase Around Early Access

The editions matter most for one practical reason: the early access windows. Every digital pre-order, Standard or Vault, gets the campaign from October 16 and DMZ from October 20. Physical pre-orders are console-only and need a retailer code for the beta, so they are the slow path in launch week.

If your plan is to be deep into DMZ before the crowds arrive, the Vault Edition's third Active Duty slot and Deployment Kit are the two items that pay off immediately, and the season of BlackCell pays off on November 6 when Season 1 opens. FAQ

How many editions of Modern Warfare 4 are there?

Three: Digital Vault Edition, Digital Standard Edition, and a physical Standard Edition that is available on consoles only.

What do you get for pre-ordering Modern Warfare 4?

Open Beta early access and the Hunter Killer operator skin, on any edition. Digital pre-orders also get automatic campaign early access from October 16 and DMZ early access from October 20.

Is the Modern Warfare 4 Vault Edition worth it?

It depends on whether you want the five Signature weapons, one season of BlackCell, the DMZ Deployment Bonus and the extra Active Duty slot. Those are the items with gameplay or progression value; the eight operator skins are cosmetic.

How does the 10% loyalty discount work?

Own and have played a qualifying previous Call of Duty on the same platform and account, and the Vault Edition drops 10%. It applies to the Vault Edition only, only on pre-orders and pre-purchases, and it is lost if you upgrade from Standard later.

Can I upgrade the Standard Edition to the Vault Edition?

Yes, on the same platform as the original purchase, at any point. Just note that an upgrade is not a pre-order, so the 10% loyalty discount no longer applies.
